"It looks like the iPlayer, Flash and multimedia devices are gradually ensuring the demise of standalone Internet radios."
That would be a great shame. You can't replace a proper box sitting on the bedside table, sideboard or whatever.

No surprise from Roku there - people who listed to 'media' via white earphones are hardly your typical purchaser of a standalone radio set. And yet most Internet Radios I've come across would bamboozle your typical over-50's user on first acquaintance, so why would they buy it?

Sure, the extra stuff that IR can do which traditional FM can't, maybe I could accept that might take a little getting used to. But for the basics they should be no more complicated than an ordinary FM radio. That way anybody can get to grips with it as a radio without feeling like an idiot. But I know that if my Dad is asking me how to get Radio 4 on the device then it is really a non-starter in terms of mass market success.

I think the acid test would be this - if Radio-Jo/e average can't just take the thing out of it's box and have it playing what they normally listed to on the radio, inside 1 minute, without phoning a friend, then back to the drawing board. Complex does not have to be complicated.

This is a real pity.
My Logik IR100 still provides hours of entertainment. Plus, all the beta firmware and the mods I made, really turned a brick into a great little radio.

Progress? Not all that its cracked up to be. People these days need to be spoon-fed. Can't think for themselves. Its all point and click and if its broke - throw it. Fix something? a completely alien concept to youngsters.

I don't think one should confuse a simple and intuitive interface with being spoon fed. I don't believe a radio should be awkward or challenging to use, nor require recourse to the manual, google or a forum. The Roberts 83i is pretty good in this regard, the Pure Evoke is dreadful. The Logik IR100 - sure, but who really wants to go through 100 firmware upgrades and subscribe to a beta programme to get there?
Blaming it on the customers' ineptitude or defective upbringing is pissing in the wind - the customer is always right. It is an expression I hate, because I know first hand how wrong customers can be. But so far as revenue is concerned customers really are right since it is their judgement call.

Your comment about Curry's, my point about customers and revenue:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12906017

compare with

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12684995

I kind of like the symmetry in the + and the - 20% figures!

The customer is always right - but Curry's clearly don't understand that and so their revenue suffers.
